I don't really have any rhyme or reason for these listings, it's more so a "feeling" thing, the intangibles, the aura, though obviously if it has Pinkerton like lyrics, it has no shot. I'm gonna try and focus on personal favorites, so, there might be some obscure stuff, and please check those out.
As a fairly big fan of the genre, I'll be the first to admit, Twee-Pop is not cool. it's the opposite of Cool for the most part, it's very wimpy, it's very cutsey and lacks a lot of confidence, that's basically the calling point of the genre, and most of advantage Lucy's stuff prior to station fits that. But on this album, that must've got a rush of confidence or something, there's just a lot more poise to everything. It isn't loud and it isn't powerful, it just sounds like a band that has full assurance in what they're doing and in their song writing, and it's so memorable and straight up cool as a result.
Late 80s hip hop prior to the lawsuit about samples, is one of the coolest genres ever. Endlessly creative, still has a lot of the jam and dance influences of early early hip hop, and it's honestly just really sick to see a genre move forward so quickly. Well I wouldn't say this is my favorite of that era, I think it has some of the most out there production of it, and Kool Keith's weird delivery gives it a really unique and cool flavor.
I'm not black, and I'm not a black panther, and most political hip hop is very corny and says nothing, but there's a very real rawness to this album. I mean, the cover is about shooting George H.W Bush. The production done by a really young DJ shadow, who is mostly liked by dorks, mixes so well with Paris' really fierce delivery. Say which you will about the politics, but this album is mostly unmatched in terms of its energy, especially as the 90s went on.
This album isn't just cool, it's the best album ever in my opinion. People rightfully rag on shoegaze pretty often for being kind of a monotone genre, where outside of the distortion, there's nothing much going on, which is a fair complaint for some albums, even an iconic one like Loveless by MBV. But the song writing and forward pushing momentum here keeps every song so fresh, it's not punk obviously but it has so much energy that so much alt rock as a whole lacks, everything is always moving and moving in the perfect direction for the song. It's so thought out and so tight in that regard, but never loses that momentum, it's an achievement, and as a result just out of this world cool.
This, more so then any other album to ever exist, fucks.
